If the first trailer for director Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages didn’t blow your denim miniskirt up, perhaps this new one will.  The Hairspray director leads this feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical by the same name. Centering on a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who falls in love with an all-star rocker (Tom Cruise), Rock of Ages will feature 1980s hits by such classic bands as Journey, Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.  This particular trailer ends on a high note of sorts with Cruise rocking out to Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.” Rock of Ages, also starring Diego Boneta, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary J. The first trailer for the remake of Sparkle has gone online. The story was inspired by the legendary female singing group The Supremes and stars Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, and Carmen Ejogo as three sisters who start out singing at their local church, and go on to find great success—and troubles—as a Motown girl group. The film also sadly marks the final onscreen performance of Whitney Houston, as she plays the single mother of Sparks’ lead character. The period and Motown setting is ripe with possibilities, but the songs in this trailer seem a bit too modern to fit. This probably has something to do with the fact that R. Kelly wrote original songs for the film, but the story does show promise so I’ll hold off judgment until we’ve seen more.

With the second season premiere of Game of Thrones (read my review here) putting all eyes on HBO, the network has been busy promoting all their forthcoming shows with new teasers for True Blood and the Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama The Newsroom showing up. Now we have another quick tease for the third season of Boardwalk Empire. There’s no footage from the new season, but an intimidating voiceover from Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson which promises some big changes this fall. Watch the teaser trailer after the jump!

The first trailer and a batch of images from Seth MacFarlane‘s feature directorial debut Ted have gone online. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a grown man whose childhood wish that his teddy bear would come to life suddenly comes true. The catch is that the bear (played by Macfarlane using motion-capture) turns out to be a swearing, pot-smoking wreck. The trailer is pretty fantastic, especially since it’s red band. Wahlberg lets his “fuck”-laden Boston accent fly, and he and Ted look to have some incredibly entertaining chemistry. The bear is the most adorable foul-mouthed, dirty-minded stuffed animal you’ll ever come across and I’m kind of in love with him.

Right about now, HBO subscribers are probably in a high over the debut of the second season of Game of Thrones or the impending summer return of season five of True Blood. But there is a new series on the premium network you should keep an eye on. It seems that Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) has a lot of venting to do and he gets everything off his chest in this brilliant first trailer for the new HBO drama, The Newsroom. Starring Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston and Emily Mortimer, The Newsroom keeps a familiar politico-centric feel to Sorkin’s The West Wing but now features a newsroom setting replacing the White House. In this first trailer, nationally recognized news anchor Will McAvoy (Daniels) loses his objectivity (and possibly his audience) when responding to a question from the crowd at a college panel. Daniels immediately won me over by saying everything a rational and informed human being should say in spite of the political backlash it was bound to incur. Hit the jump to check it out.

Newsroom is the third series in Aaron Sorkin’s Behind the Scenes trilogy, following Sports Night and Studio 60.  The one-hour drama is set at a 24-hour cable news network.  The story revolves around an anchor (Daniels), his new executive producer ( Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski) and their boss (Waterston).

Jane Fonda will also recur as Leona Lansing, the CEO of the network’s parent company: “She’s a titan and her corporate concerns often conflict with the reporting of the news outlet she owns.”  TV Line likens the character to Ted Turner, the CNN founder whom Fonda was married to from 1991-2001.  The character’s name is a tribute to two powerful women: the late Leona Helmsley and Sherry Lansing, the first female studio head. As promised, the first trailer for the Total Recall remake premiered this afternoon during the Celtics-Heat game and promptly found its way online.  The clip gets across the basic premise.  Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) turns to benevolent company Rekall to turn his dreams of being a super spy into real memories: “But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.”  The real emphasis is on the action, and until seeing this trailer, I didn’t understand just how big a blockbuster Total Recall wants to be.  As a devoted fan of trippy sci-fi, here’s hoping director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) pulled it off.

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, and a platinum blonde John Cho also star .  Total Recall opens on August 3.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

The first trailer for the animated fourth installment in the Starship Troopers franchise has gone online. I was unaware that the film series had stretched this far, but I’m impressed that producers decided to switch to animation for Starship Troopers: Invasion. The film is actually a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s cheese-tastic 1997 sci-fi pic, ignoring the other sequels, and Casper Van Dien is onboard as an executive producer. This trailer plays very much like a teaser, but the CG-animation is actually quite well done.

A NSFW international teaser trailer has gone online for David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis.  The teaser provides the first look at the tone of the film, and more importantly, Robert Pattinson‘s performance in it.  In Cosmopolis, Pattinson plays a newlywed billionaire who ends up losing his bride and his billions in a single day.  Even when Pattinson isn’t doing Twilight, he’s hewed towards romantic dramas with Remember Me and Water for Elephants.  However, as Twilight draws to a close, his upcoming films will perhaps provide him with the necessary escape velocity to get away from Edward Cullen.  In Bel Ami, he plays a character who fucks his way up the social ladder of 1890s Paris, and in Cosmopolis, his character purposely shoots himself in the hand.  I can take or leave Bel Ami, but Cosmopolis looks pretty great, and I’m eager to see Pattinson break free of his famous mopey vampire.

The first official trailer for the animated comedy Hotel Transylvania has gone online. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), the story centers on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) trying to throw a party for his daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday, but his plans go haywire when a human (Andy Samberg) comes to the hotel and develops a crush on Mavis. The animation actually looks pretty great, and I think the story has some fun potential, but Sandler’s work as Dracula is a bit hard to get used to. It sounds like the actor’s “goofy” voice he uses when making jokes or putting on a character for SNL, so it’s tough to buy it as the actual voice of this Dracula. We don’t really get much into the story here, but there are more than a few laughs (who doesn’t love a good “skeletons taking a shower” joke?)  and I’m pleasantly surprised by how fun it all looks.

A Russian trailer for the animated family film Hotel Transylvania has gone online.  Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), the story centers on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) trying to throw a party for his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday, but his plans go haywire when a human (Andy Samberg) comes to the hotel and develops a crush on Mavis.  The trailer is in Russian but the visuals are charming (particularly the use of silhouettes), and the movie could be a bit of lighthearted fun.  However, I seriously doubt that Sandler will sound like his Russian voice actor counterpart.
