Director Mary Harron has been working mainly in television since her 2000 cult classic, American Psycho, but is back this year with a new adaptation. The Moth Diaries, seemingly a foray into vampire lore, was adapted from a novel by Rachel Klein. The story follows two sixteen-year-old best friends at an all-girls boarding school whose relationship is shaken up by the arrival of a new and mysterious student. Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) must determine whether the newcomer, Ernessa (Lily Cole) is just trying to separate her from her Lucie (Sarah Gadon) or if her reasons are much more sinister. The Moth Diaries, also starring Scott Speedman (Underworld), will be available on iTunes, VOD and other digital hubs starting March 20th, with a theatrical release on April 20th. The Playlist debuted a new poster for the film, which played at Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals last year. Check out the synopsis from the novel below (via Amazon), followed by the trailer and poster.
Lucy and Ernessa have become inseparable. Ernessa’s taken her over. She’s consuming her.
What I saw wasn’t real. And I know it wasn’t a dream.
Ernessa is a vampire.
At an exclusive girls’ boarding school, a sixteen-year-old girl records her most intimate thoughts in a diary. The object of her growing obsession is her roommate, Lucy Blake, and Lucy’s friendship with their new and disturbing classmate. Ernessa is an enigmatic, moody presence with pale skin and hypnotic eyes.
Around her swirl dark rumors, suspicions, and secrets as well as a series of ominous disasters. As fear spreads through the school and Lucy isn’t Lucy anymore, fantasy and reality mingle until what is true and what is dreamed bleed together into a waking nightmare that evokes with gothic menace the anxieties, lusts, and fears of adolescence. And at the center of the diary is the question that haunts all who read it: Is Ernessa really a vampire? Or has the narrator trapped herself in the fevered world of her own imagining?

A new red band spot for the Todd Phillips-produced party comedy Project X has gone online. The previous trailers have been entertaining enough, but this red band spot really brings out the “Rated R” aspect of the film. The movie looks to be sufficiently filthy, and this trailer highlights the first jokes from the film that I’ve found more than marginally funny. If the rest of the movie is like this trailer (which I assume it is), then I can definitely understand how most of the films jokes aren’t exactly age-appropriate. I’m still not on board with the whole “dwarf punching people in the balls” bit, but I think Project X takes an interesting approach to the comedy genre and Steve said he laughed his ass off, so I’m looking forward to checking it out.
Hit the jump to watch the red band spot. If you haven’t already, enter our contest to win some movie-related swag. The film stars Thomas Mann, Miles Teller, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Dax Flame, Nichole O’Connor and Alexis Knapp. Project X opens on March 2nd.

A U.S. trailer for Gareth Evans’s insane actioner The Raid has gone online. The film is apparently being billed as The Raid: Redemption here in the US, but it’s the same crazy action movie that’s had people buzzing for the last few months. Our own Matt Goldberg hailed it as “one of the best action movies in years” and Screen Gems is already hard at work on an English-language remake. The Indonesian pic boasts a simple premise: 20 elite SWAT team members must make their way up the treacherous floors of a criminal-infested highrise in order to get to the gang’s leader. As you can surmise, some ridiculous action sequences ensue and many of them are on full display in this US trailer. The film is the first in a planned trilogy from Evans, and he recently spoke to Steve at the Sundance Film Festival a bit about his plans for the follow-ups.

Seeing as how Armageddon and Deep Impact are almost 15 years old now, it’s apparently time for movies to tackle the apocalypse again. This time, however, the apocalypse-centered films are more interested in understated drama than exploding your eyeballs. The Steve Carell dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens this May, and today the first trailer for the drama 4:44 Last Day on Earth hit the web. The film stars Willem Dafoe and looks to be quite the downer, as the story takes place the night before the world is set to end at 4:44 am. The protagonists of the film aren’t trying to find a means of escape or a way out, but have wholly accepted the fact that they will cease to exist in one day’s time. It’s heavy stuff that should make for an intriguing cinematic experience, but I may be in need of a hefty pick-me-up once the credits roll. Space Jam watch party, anyone?

Here’s the official synopsis for 4:44 Last Day on Earth:
In a large apartment high above the city lives our couple. They’re in love. She’s a painter, he’s a successful actor. Just a normal afternoon – except that this isn’t a normal afternoon, for them or anyone else. Because tomorrow, at 4:44 am, give or take a few seconds, the world will come to an end far more rapidly than even the worst doomsayer could have imagined. The final meltdown will come not without warnings, but with no means of escape. There will be no survivors. As always, there are those who, as their last cigarette is being lit and the blindfold tightened, will still hope against hope for some kind of reprieve. For a miracle. Not our two lovers. They – like the majority of the Earth’s population – have accepted their fate: the world is going to end.

A new trailer has gone online for Wrath of the Titans. There’s not much in the way of new footage, but the marketing continues to push the big monsters over the puny humans. The sequel takes place ten years after the original, and Perseus (Sam Worthington) is called in to assist the gods in taking down the titans. I’m not sure if plots have become more coherent or 3D post-conversion has advanced in a decade, but one thing is for sure: wood is impenetrable. You can use planks of wood as a shield against a fireball. Spare me your mythical weapons. I want wooden debris.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Danny Huston, Edgar Ramirez, Bill Nighy, Toby Kebbell, and Rosamund Pike. Wrath of the Titans opens March 30th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Wrath of the Titans:
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington) –the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)–is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

A new trailer for Pixar’s Brave has gone online. Rather than show off a bunch of scenes from the movie or even give an overview of the plot. The movie follows Merida, young princess (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) in the Scottish Highlands who defies an age-old custom, inadvertently unleashing chaos and fury in the kingdom. This trailer doesn’t explain any of that and instead ops to show one scene. The scene has three less-than-desirable men trying to win an archery contest for Merida’s hand in marriage. Merida, none-too-happy with the situation, eventually has to show everyone what an utter bad-ass she is. I still want to see more of the film’s scope, but the new trailer does a good job showing the movie’s comic and dramatic sides.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and click here to see the poster that was released yesterday. The film also features the voices of Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters. Brave opens in 3D on June 22nd.

Here’s the official synopsis for Brave:
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.
Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.
Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humor enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Morgan Spurlock took his camera to Comic-Con in 2010 and joined forces with geek icons Stan Lee and Joss Whedon to turn the footage into the documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope. The trailer was released tonight. I was struck by the fact that, unlike Spurlock’s other docs, he doesn’t appear on screen in this one. If the trailer is any indication, Spurlock instead assigned the dominant voice to Kevin Smith, likely as official an authority on Comic-Con can be.
The massive cultural phenomenon is obviously ripe for exploration. And Spurlock seems most drawn to the aspects of the convention that I as a movie blogger have little exposure to, like the intense costumes or the actual comic industry dealings. Most of the reviews from festival premieres have been positive, save our own. All in all, early signs suggest A Fan’s Hope lives up to the title. Watch the trailer after the jump.

COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE- a film by Morgan Spurlock explores this amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of five attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.

The first trailer for the documentary The Imposter has gone online. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, with our own Matt Goldberg calling it “one of the best thrillers in years.” While that statement seems odd given that The Imposter is a documentary, one look at this trailer and you’ll understand. The pic tells the story of a family whose son went missing from San Antonio, Texas, only to apparently turn up three years later in Spain. Director Bart Layton makes heavy use of reenactments and dramatizations that look to be pulled off quite well; this isn’t your cheesy Bio channel special. I’ve heard that the less you know about this movie the better, and this trailer acts as a wonderful teaser without really giving much away.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film was recently acquired by Indomina Group for distribution and will receive a theatrical release later this year. The Imposter will also screen at this year’s SXSW Film Festival next month.
Thanks to First Showing for the heads up:

Since The Artist is lined-up to win big at the Academy Awards on Sunday, Fox has piggybacked off the silent film to create a parody trailer for their upcoming film Ice Age: Continental Drift. Like every Ice Age film, the teasers are all based around Scrat trying to get an acorn but being thwarted in his attempts. It’s very Looney Tunes, and they’re far better than the full-length films, which feature uninteresting characters and flat jokes. Scrat sells the movie, but the movies barely features Scrat. It’s a constant bait-and-switch. However, the franchise has been ridiculous successful and that’s why the fourth film is on the way this summer.
To see Scrat in The Artist-form, check out the trailer after the jump. The celebrity-packed voice cast includes Ray Romano, Jeremy Renner, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Wedge, John Leguizamo, and Aziz Ansari, Nick Frost, Joy Behar, JB Smoove, Alan Tudyk, Heather Morris, Josh Gad, Kunal Nayyar, Alain Chabat, and hip/hop artist Nicki Minaj. Ice Age: Continental Drift opens in 3D on July 13th. A non-parody trailer is due out on March 5th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Ice Age: Continental Drift:
Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

A new trailer for American Reunion has gone online. I would never have guessed that the American Pie franchise would feel so sentimental, but the marketing materials for American Reunion have been just incredibly nostalgic. This new trailer delves a bit more into the plot, as we see Jason Biggs’s Jim tempted by the girl he used to babysit who’s now turning 18. Seann William Scott looks like he’ll once again steal the show, and it really feels nice to see all the characters back together again. The overarching tone appears to center on where the characters are now as opposed to where they thought they’d be when they were wide-eyed high schoolers, and I’m interested to see how far they take this. Of course the crux of the films is the humor, but there was a sweetness to American Pie that looks to be prevalent in American Reunion. Time will tell, but I’m genuinely looking forward to this (likely) final installment of the main franchise.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nichols, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge, and Shannon Elizabeth. American Reunion opens April 6, 2012.
