The first trailer for Judd Apatow’s fourth directorial effort, This Is 40, has gone online. The film is a semi-spinoff of Apatow’s Knocked Up, as it follows the lives of the characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a new classic, I was a big fan of Knocked Up, and while Funny People certainly had its issues, I enjoyed it for the most part. That said, this trailer for This Is 40 shows huge promise. We already know that Rudd and Mann have impeccable chemistry, but I love the idea of Apatow tackling the issues of aging and mid-adulthood through his dramedic eye. We get a look at a couple of the bit parts from Jason Segel and Melissa McCarthy (to great comedic effect) and the end showcases Rudd’s penchant for spot-on delivery. It’s safe to say that in a very crowded holiday release schedule, This Is 40 just jumped up towards the top of my most anticipated list.

Here’s a synopsis for This Is 40:
Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see firsthand how they are dealing with their current state of life.

The red band trailer for the adaptation of Andrea Portes’ novel, Hick, is online. The film stars Chloe Moretz as a 13-year-old girl who runs away from home to escape her mom’s alcoholic boyfriends and to seek fame. She crosses paths with a troubled woman played by Blake Lively, and this red band trailer definitely promises something a bit different. The film looks kind of chaotic and more than a little uncomfortable—my mind kept racing between Moretz’s age and how creepy Eddie Redmayne’s character was acting. Directed by Derick Martini, the film screened at the Toronto Film Festival to a less-than-enthusiastic response, with our own Matt Goldberg calling it a “dull, ill-conceived mess” in his review. I’m intrigued enough by this red band clip that I want to see more, so we’ll see how subsequent trailers sell the film.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Juliette Lewis and Alec Baldwin. Hick will be available VOD on May 8th and opens in theaters on May 11th.

Steve Carell has moved up from The 40 Year Old Virgin to a marriage counselor for Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep in Hope Springs. The film, formerly titled Great Hope Springs, centers on Arnold (Jones) and Maeve (Streep) Soames, a middle-aged couple who find that their marriage has gone stale after 30 years. In a last ditch effort to save their relationship, they seek the help of marriage counselor Dr. Bernie Feld (Carell). The trailer has some great character moments and it’s nice to see Jones and Streep playing some plain old ordinary people for a change, though they play them rather well. Hope Springs, written by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones), will reunite Streep with The Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel. The romantic comedy, which opens August 10th, also stars Elisabeth Shue and Jean Smart. Hit the jump to see the trailer and poster for Hope Springs.
Check out the first trailer after the official synopsis (via MovieFone):
Many years of marriage have left Maeve (Streep) wanting to spice things up and reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a famed relationship guru (Carell) in the town of Great Hope Springs, she must persuade her skeptical husband (Jones) to get on a plane for an intense week of marriage and sex therapy. Getting there was hard enough…now shedding their bedroom hang ups, learning some new moves and rediscovering their youthful spark is when the real adventure begins.

Though we’ve already posted a bounty of G.I. Joe: Retaliation material over the past few days, there’s one more Joe-related story to add to the pile: an international trailer. The new trailer for the sequel premiered yesterday, and this international trailer differs from that one in two ways: more global focus, and more ninjas. The first trailer for the film pleasantly surprised me, but yesterday’s clip left me a little disheartened. I want to see a movie that’s not simply a CGI-heavy Transformers rehash, and I’m hoping director Jon M. Chu has a fun take up his sleeve that’s more hand-to-hand combat oriented. Ninjas automatically make a movie at least 45% cooler, and Dwayne Johnson is the king of charisma.
Hit the jump to check out the international trailer and for a quick rundown on all our recent G.I. Joe: Retaliation coverage. The film opens on June 29th and also stars Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum, Walton Goggins, Ray Park, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, RZA, Ray Stevenson, and D.J. Cotrona.

Here’s the official synopsis for G.I. Joe: Retaliation:
A follow-up to the 2009 release of G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, which grossed over $300M worldwide, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with HASBRO and di Bonaventura Pictures, commences production on G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, from a screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe(R) characters, the film is scheduled to be released on June 29,2012.

File this one away in the “win” column in the argument for using film over digital. The breathtaking imagery in director Ron Fricke and writer Mark Magidson’s trailer for Samsara paints a vivid moving picture of our varied and colorful world, captured in 70mm film. The documentary (the most recent in a filmography that features Baraka and Chronos) is a visual journey across 25 different countries over the course of five years that features vibrant scenes that bridge humanity in nature and is accompanied by a dynamic score. The word Samsara itself is Tibetan for “the ever-turning wheel of life,” something that Fricke attempts to capture through his unique visual style. Hit the jump to see the trailer and read the synopsis for Samsara, which opens in theaters this August.
Here’s the synopsis for Samsara, followed by the first trailer:
Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience. SAMSARA reunites filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS brought a new visual and musical artistry to theaters. Dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world, from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience, and illuminating the links between humanity and the rest of nature.

Director Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman opens in a little more than a month and Universal wants to make sure you know all the key players, so they’ve rattled off this roll call TV spot. Most of the marketing so far has been geared toward the power struggle between Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) with little attention paid to the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and even less to Prince William (Sam Claflin) and the Dwarves (Toby Jones, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan). Personally, I feel like the marketing machine has been humming along nicely up until this point; this 30-second teaser spot does little else but splash images of the actors across the screen along with their character names. The new international trailer, however, is a nicely edited piece that reminds me why Snow White and the Huntsman, which opens June 1st, was one of our Most Anticipated movies of this quarter. Hit the jump to check out both videos.
The TV spot and international trailer follow the official synopsis for Snow White and the Huntsman:
In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.
The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

The first trailer for the period crime drama Lawless has gone online. Based on the novel The Wettest County in the World, the film stars Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy as two brothers who become bootleggers in the South during Prohibition. This first trailer is pretty incredible, and a different stellar actor seems to pop into frame every 10 seconds. LaBeouf, Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman all promise strong performances under the gritty/dirty direction of John Hillcoat (The Road). Prohibition is a swell setting for some great drama, and I’m excited to see Hillcoat weave all the pieces of the story together with a strong character focus. If the setting, cast, Hillcoat and the story aren’t enough to entice you, did I mention that the trailer features a bad ass Gary Oldman wielding a tommy gun?
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska, and Dane DeHaan. Lawless will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month and opens nationwide on August 31st.

A new trailer for the animated feature Hotel Transylvania has gone online. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), the story centers on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) trying to throw a party for his daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday, but his plans go haywire when a human (Andy Samberg) comes to the monsters-only hotel and develops a crush on Mavis. This trailer isn’t wildly different from the first trailer that was released, but there are a couple new scenes thrown in that we haven’t see before (including a toilet joke, obviously). I’m still on the fence about this one. We could either be in for a really fun monster movie, or 90 minutes of unfunny and cheap gags that play to the lowest common denominator. The premise has promise and I quite like the animation style, so I’m sincerely hoping it’s the former.
Hit the jump to watch the new trailer. The voice cast also includes David Spade (Griffin the Invisible Man), Steve Buscemi (Wayne the Werewolf), Kevin James (Frankenstein), Molly Shannon (Wanda the Werewolf) and Cee Lo Green (Murray the Mummy). Hotel Transylvania opens on September 28th.

The full trailer for Pixar’s Brave has gone online along with a new clip. The past trailers have tried to blend the comic and dramatic sides of the film, and done so with varying levels of success. The latest trailer puts up a clear wall between the two, showing off the amusing antics of the protagonist Princess Merida’s family (I love her father’s impression of his daughter) and then making a jarring, abrupt cut to the dramatic, mystical side of the adventure where Merida makes a wish to change her fate of being married off to another clan and losing her freedom. The first half of the trailer made laugh, and the second half gave me chills (I love the use of Julie Fowlis‘ “Tha Mo Ghaol Air Aird A’ Chuain”), but I’m still looking for the connective tissue that will bring the two tones together.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with the clip (which falls on the comic side of Brave‘s schizophrenic advertising). The film features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters. Brave opens in 3D on June 22nd.

Here’s the official synopsis for Brave:
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Paramount has released a new trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation that reveals more of the story and showcases some really cool action that’s been amplified by some great looking CGI. While I was in the minority for liking the first G.I. Joe movie, I’ll admit the new trailer looks like a huge step forward for the franchise and the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and Bruce Willis as the original Joe seems like it’s going to pay off in a big way at the box office. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens June 29 and also stars Adrianne Palicki, Channing Tatum, Walton Goggins, Ray Park, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, RZA, Ray Stevenson, and D.J. Cotrona.
In addition to the brand new trailer, earlier today I did exclusive video interviews at CinemaCon with Dwayne Johnson and director Jon M. Chu. Hit the links to watch. Both revealed a lot of new information.
